Becoming who God called you to be isn’t easy…but, it’s possible. Everyone makes poor choices at some point. The key to successful living is learning from our mistakes–this is where we gain the knowledge and endurance needed to reach our goals. In Overcoming Obstacles, Dr. Karla reveals how low self-esteem and broken family relationships lead her down the road to teen pregnancy and to a G.E.D., instead of a high school diploma. She wanted more and found herself on the way to redemption, stronger relationships, and a doctorate. With biblical insight, honesty, and a mother’s loving instruction, Dr. Karla will encourage you to move beyond the hurt of your past and esteem you to stand in the face of adversity. Interview with Dr. Karla Valrie-Potts
When did you realize you had a book (or some books) inside you?
I realized that I had a book inside of me one day as I began to think about my life. I had gone through and accomplished so much that I felt somehow, somewhere, someday, someone could benefit from my testimony.
Why is the theme of this project important?
The theme of my project is important because I want to help others excel in his or her life. I know that there are many hurting individuals out there, as I was, that need to know that there is still hope and room for change and success in your life regardless of your past.
What did you learn about yourself while writing this book?
What I learned about myself while writing this book was that I’m stronger than I thought that I was. I also realized how far I had come with the help of the Lord. The experiences of my life were the necessary building blocks to assist me through every season of my life.
How do you find time to write?
How do I find time to write? Hmmm. It varies. Many times something into comes my spirit and I have to stop whatever it is that I am doing, no matter what it is, and write it down. Other times, I dedicate time for writing. Honestly, research and writing comes naturally for me. It was a part of my upbringing, as my grandfather made me do it during my childhood.
If you could work on a writing project with anyone (dead or alive), who would it be? Why?
The person that I would like to work on a writing project with would be Maya Angelou.
I just love the way she uses words to express her feelings and how they provide what I like to call Mind Movies. You feel what she feels, you see what she sees, you hurt when she hurts, and you feel joy when she feels joy. Not only are her written words powerful, her oratory skills have a great affect on me too. She has a true gift of expression and I honestly believe that it came from her life experiences. I feel that she could show me how to delve deeper into my inner self and emotions and put them in words that would touch the souls of many.
