Interview with Kellen & Berthina Coleman

When did you realize you had a book (or some books) inside you?
We realized we had a book series when we started documenting our family travels thru illustration and found out that less than 15% of children’s books were written about children of color. From that 15% even less were African American children and African American writers. Once we started to share our vision with more experience organizations and people in the book industry we knew we had something unique and special.

Why is the theme of this project important?
It is important for their to be a diverse amount of children’s books covering all races. Black children have few options that aren’t focused on civil rights leaders, slavery, or other historic events. We wanted to show that Black children travel to the beach just like Barbie and enjoy everyday fun. To our knowledge there are no other books of two black girls traveling. Keep in mind these are their real life travels to various cities, states, and countries on the market. We wanted to find books that reflect real life experiences.

What did you learn about yourself while writing this book?
We learned as a couple how to let the other express themselves and how to disagree better. Since my wife Berthina has the eye of detail and I am the creative we had to learn to merge those two skills to finalize this project. We also learned to learn on our faith and that all the great ideas and plans we had would come to pass but God had the final say. While creating this book real life happened my mother passed, our illustrator battled life threatening situations with his adult children and his own health issues. We had to trust in God that the vision he gave us would become a reality.

How do you find time to write?
We took time early Saturday before the children we’re full up or late a night to discuss the book. Even on the way home from work we worked on details via phone on the book, Constant emails back and forth between my wife and I and our illustrator. Writers find time to write not by choice but by force so they can sleep. My wife works over 80hrs a wk at the hospital as a busy Radiology resident and battles traffic. I run a business and take care of our two girls, when it comes to getting work done we make no excuses and we write something every night. We have 22 stories already written out on the girls experiences.

If you could work on a writing project with anyone (dead or alive), who would it be? Why?
Jesus and Margie Thomas my mother who this book is dedicated too.
