According to the American Coffee Association, approximately 83% of Americans drink coffee on a daily basis. I am one of those Americans but I’m not one of those people who can’t function without coffee. Most of the time I’m a decaf drinker—I love the taste of coffee. It must be black and with robust flavor.
Today is National Coffee Day so I while I get my fill, yes I plan to stop at a few places, I wanted to share some coffee facts with you.
2 HOT Coffee Facts
Technically, coffee is a fruit.
Like me, you’ve heard coffee “bean” all your life. That’s okay. It is not your fault that you didn’t know. And, coffee berry just sounds wrong even if that’s what it is. The seed that we call a bean actually grows at the center of a tiny red or purple fruit (a berry).
The most expensive coffee doesn’t come from Starbucks. It comes from an animal, kind of.
See that kind of furry little creature hiding in the foliage? That is an Asian Palm Civet. See that picture of those coffee cherries above? Well, when a civet eats coffee cherries it defecates the “pits” or coffee beans that are then rinsed thoroughly and brewed. Apparently, the digestive system of the little animal causes the beans to ferment, giving them a rich earthy taste. Well, I’m not sure what Kopi Luwak, to coffee made from this process, tastes like but you can find out for as much as $30 a cup. Want some? I think I’ll pass.
