It’s that time of the month again. My 1000-word short Beauty Queen is now live over at

I had originally intended to write a sweet love short for June. However, when Dr. Maya Angelou, one of the most precious literary voices of our time, passed, our editor challenged us to write something inspired by her.

This piece is largely autobiographical. I hope you enjoy it.

She didn’t feel beautiful.

Standing in the massive dressing room among the crowd of babbling teenage girls, their catty mothers, and overbearing pageant coaches, Ruby felt like a fraud. No. She felt as fake as the silver plated, three-karat cubic zirconium earrings dangling from her lobes. She appraised her reflection in the portable, lighted vanity mirror. A stunning, regal lady, who emanated poise, grace, and confidence glared haughtily back at her. Pam, her best friend and makeup artist, had made plain Ruby look just as good as, if not better than, the long, lean, blond goddesses surrounding her.

Chagrined, she watched the lips of her mirror image curl into a smug, knowing grin. Underneath all of the makeup, straight hair, false eyelashes, and designer gown, Ruby hid her secrets well. Read more…
